First ever fashion show at the White House


The First fashion show ever held in the White House in Washington, 1968. Designer Rudi Gernreich, centre watches one of his own designs being modelled.

Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson awarded the highest recognition to fashion and the fashion show in the United States when she planned and sponsored "How to Discover America in Style" in the state dining room of the White House on February 29, 1968. This was the first Fashion show ever held in the White House. It was given as entertainment for the wives of governors attending a conference in Washington. It also tied in with the Presidents campaign to promote travel within the United States and Mrs. Johnson's national beautification programme.
