Good models are not that easy to come by. However, runway models, with whom we concerned here, are less difficult to find than photographic models who must have an extra dimension before a camera. So many would-be models believe that a pretty face is the requisite, when actually not-so-pretty face may be preffered as more chic and more interesting. Balenciaga, who was the dean of Paris couturiers for two decades, was known for his ugly models- but they could show clothes magnificently. An agency named "Ugly" was opened in London in 1969 to supply male and female models who have faces that are interesting rather than handsome and pretty.
Many attributes combine to make a fashion show model:
- She has flair for fashion and a natural instinct about combining clothes and accessories.
- She fits into the clothes with minimal or no alterations. This means the ideal size and height for the size range she is modeling.
- She has good hair and skin, although hair pieces can solve a hair problem.
- She is objective and willing to wear clothes that she may not like personally.
- She is naturally immaculate and well-groomed.
- She is cooperative with show staff and other models.
- She appreciates the clothes and has empathy with the audience so that the latter will be sold on the former.
- She realizes that modeling is business, and is business like about appointments and bookings.
